Mari started gymnastics in Tokyo, Japan in 1978 at the age of 3. She began competing at the age of 6 and at the age of 13 became the youngest national champion in Japan. From 1988-1992 she won 5 consecutive All-Around National titles, making her one of the most remarkable Japanese gymnasts of her time. Mari participated in the 1990 American-Cup placing 3rd in the All-Around. In 1991 she participated in her first World Championship, and managed to qualify and participate at the following 1993-1995 World Championship as well. Mari was one of the Japanese stars at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, where she placed 17th in the All-Around competition.

Mari decided to retire in 1995 at the age of 20. After her competitive years she joined NTV (a major Japanese TV Network) as a Sports Commentator, which allowed her to be close to her favorite sport in spirit. Although Mari enjoyed being a Sports Broadcaster, she felt the void of gymnastics in her life and decided that by coaching gymnastics she can once again be a part of young athletes' journey through struggles, fear and pain.

Mari came to United States in the summer of 2000, following a position as an Assistant-Coach for UCLA's Women's Gymnastics Team. She has worked at Broadway Gymnastics and Champion Gymnastics Academy.

She discovered Gymnastics World via USA-Gymnastics Federation and after learning about our philosophy and the great facility she decide to make Gymnastics World her gym of choice. Her plans and future goals here at Gymnastics World is to develop a competitive girls team and support these youngsters by sharing her experiences in a competitive realm.
